Nike went to an actual skater – Ishod Wair – for help in retooling the dunk SB. The Nike Dunk Low Pro IW University Red is among the first colorways of this new dunk to release.
The basic premise is a slimmed-down and modern take on the classic dunk silhouette.
The materials are decent on these. The suede upper and leather swoosh are definitely not premium quality. The construction on the shoe seems solid though.
For the casual wearer, this is where the big difference is. These fit a bit more snug thanks to the slimmed-down profile. The most obvious reason is the thin tongue – this tongue is just barely thicker than that of a non-sb dunk. The tongue straps are thicker and lower, all contributing to the tighter fit. Gone are the pods in the rear of the shoe and most of the ankle padding. The insole adds free technology to the existing zoom air to create a more flexible shoe overall. I went true to size, but I might have been better off going half size up. That said, these are not uncomfortable now that I’m used to the new fit… It does take a bit of getting used to though if you have been wearing SB dunks for a long time.
